What is Prostate Cancer Awareness Week?

This annual event, organised by The Prostate Cancer Charity, raises awareness of the prostate gland and prostate cancer in the community.

What are the important messages for Prostate Cancer Awareness Week?

Prostate cancer is the most common male cancer in the UK – over 27,000 men will be diagnosed in 2005. Nearly 10,000 men die from this disease every year – that is more than one man every hour.

From our recent market research we have discovered that so many men, of all ages, have no idea that they have a prostate gland or what it does. For many, the prostate is a part of their body that they do not find out about until something goes wrong with it.

By “getting back to basics” about the prostate, we can equip men with knowledge so that they are in a better position to notice signs of prostate problems. Men will then be more aware of their prostate and early detection of potential problems.

Essential things men need to know about their prostate:

* Where is the prostate gland? What does it do? What happens if
* something goes wrong with it? Where can you turn if you need further
* information and support?
